Heading into 2018 lots of people will have made resolutions and plans to change and improve. Why should companies be any different? With numerous changes due in 2018 it’s the perfect time to revaluate various issues.
Too often ignored is the issue of cyber security but it’s relevant to companies large and small all over the world. According to statistics released by the government inn 2017 46% of UK businesses identified cyber security breaches which is a shocking amount.
With technology ever changing it can be hard for those who create protection to keep up to date with all the new loop holes that these technologies create as well as maintaining security on older technologies. In 2017 alone, there were numerous large-scale security breaches, most notably in the UK was ‘WannaCry’ which albeit temporarily crippled services like the National Health Service and left them with demands for bit-coin while withholding patient data. The attack took advantage of those who had not installed the latest security patch. While Microsoft eventually created a patch to protect users from the breach and a kill switch within the worm was found but huge amounts of disruption was caused all the same.
So, what should companies be doing to protect themselves in 2018?
- Make sure that all security and operating systems are up to date and set to regularly install updates
- Keep an eye on the news and be prepared to act if you hear of any other large-scale attacks
- Back up all important data in an off-site system, such as the cloud
- Actively research what you can be doing to keep your system safe
